Hersh Chopra, M.D.

Dr. Hersh Chopra is a North Carolina native. He attended Duke University on the W.N. Reynold's Scholarship and graduated Magna Cum Laude having completed the difficult pre-medical curriculum in three years. He received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina. Dr. Chopra completed his internal medicine internship at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He then volunteered as a physician in American Samoa before returning to Washington University for his ophthalmology residency. He completed his Glaucoma fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. He is Board Certified and was the first full-time glaucoma specialist in the local area. He has been practicing in Marietta since 1993.

Dr. Chopra performed the first glaucoma implant surgery and the first 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin-C glaucoma filter (advanced methods of treating glaucoma) in the county. He was the first to successfully use tissue glues for the healing of ocular wounds in Cobb County.

Dr. Chopra helped in the introduction of releaseable sutures in glaucoma filtering surgery, a technique that he described in the inaugural issue of the medical journal "Glaucoma". Dr. Chopra was also the first surgeon in the county to remove cataracts with only topical anaesthesia (without the use of sharp needles), a technique that minimizes potential complications and has since been used by other doctors in the area.

Dr. Chopra has served as the Chairman of the Ophthalmology Department at Wellstar-Kennestone Hospital and has authored several articles published in medical journals. He has also been an active volunteer and has donated his time, money, and medical services to the indigent in this country and abroad. Dr. Chopra's special interests include glaucoma and cataract surgery.

 

Alan L. Benedict, M.D.

Dr. Alan L. Benedict was born in Illinois and raised in southwest Florida. He attended Loyola University in New Orleans with an academic scholarship and graduated Cum Laude in 1981. He then attended the University of South Florida College of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1985. Dr. Benedict served his internship in Internal Medicine at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital and then began his Ophthalmology residency at the Wake Forest University Eye Center in 1986. Dr. Benedict was given the prestigious position of chief resident of the Ophthalmology program in 1988. Dr. Benedict entered general Ophthalmology practice in 1989 and attained his Board Certification in Ophthalmology in 1991. Dr. Benedict has practiced in this area since 1992. Since this time he has helped countless patients see better with his expertise in cataract surgery, diabetic treatment, and treatment of ocular diseases. He has taught his cataract surgery technique to other ophthalmologists in the area.

Dr. Benedict is an elected Fellow to the American Academy of Ophthalmology and an active member in several other local and national medical organizations. Dr. Benedict has trained to perform refractive surgery including LASIK surgery at the Emory Vision Correction Center. He is married and has three children. His wife is a Dermatologist in the metro Atlanta area. The Benedicts are active in Church and School related activities.
